Date & Time

September 10, 2025 to September 10, 2025
7PM

Location

BioBAT Art Space 2nd Floor Studios

About

How is the concept of "life" reimagined with our current and future generative tools in vitro and in silico?

Join Soft Genes, SeedAI, and BioBAT Art Space in an evening of exploration and connection, featuring a conversation with Shelby Newsad, building new visions for bio and health, and Heather Dewey-Hagborg, information artist and bio-hacker, moderated by Christina Agapakis exploring the aesthetic and material intersection these questions raise.

Doors: 6:30 pm
Panel discussion: 7:00 - 7:45 pm
Hang: 7:45 - 9:30 pm

Christina Agapakis is an extremely interdisciplinary synthetic biologist working to build more creative and human futures for biotechnology. She is the founder of Oscillator, a design agency telling new stories at the intersection of life science and technology, and a guest curator for an upcoming show at BioBAT Art Space.

Heather Dewey-Hagborg is a New York-based artist and biohacker who is interested in art as research and technological critique. Her controversial biopolitical art practice includes the project Stranger Visions in which she created portrait sculptures from analyses of genetic material (hair, cigarette butts, chewed up gum) collected in public places.
Heather has shown work internationally at events and venues including the World Economic Forum, the Daejeon Biennale, the Guangzhou Triennial, and the Shenzhen Urbanism and Architecture Biennale, Transmediale, the Walker Center for Contemporary Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and PS1 MoMA.

Shelby Newsad is committed to facilitating step-change technologies in bio and health. Before investing at Compound, they’ve worked as a bioscience researcher across plant sciences (PhD, University of Cambridge), neuroscience (National Institutes of Health), and drug discovery (Helmholtz Institute). As a former researcher and technologist at heart, Shelby loves getting deep into the tech with founders and has >20 active bio and health theses.

SeedAi is s a non-profit organization that works at the forefront of artificial intelligence policy and governance, collaborating with policymakers, scientists, academics, and the private sector to design policies, programs, and tools.

Soft Genes is an LA-based research community that connects overlapping worlds in art, academia, and industry to enable creative practice that centers biology via interdisciplinary collaboration. Through sharing materials and skills, we aim to enable work that eschews the boundaries of "art" and "science”.

About

Winners of the 2024 Biodesign Challenge Outstanding Art Prize, and following a year-long mentorship with BioBAT Art Space, The pHen artist collective of Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design Budapest, will present a solo show in our gallery, slated to open in June, 14th 2025.

Featuring a revolutionary and open-source 3D printed pen that utilizes natural and customizable PH-responsive pigments, The pHen Project is a complete reimagining of the artist's drawing instrument.

Imagine a single pen that allows artists to develop infinite hues from accessible natural sources. With its capacity to create a range of colors by adjusting the PH balance of inks derived from common cabbage and elements found in nature, the pHen isn’t just a writing or drawing tool; it is a catalyst for curiosity and imagination which connects users of all ages to science and nature through creativity.

Working towards a sustainable future by developing low-cost, open-source art supplies inspired by nature’s wonders, pHen aims to reach as many people as possible by creating accessible tools that anyone can adapt to their own needs.

The BioBAT Art Space installation explores the design of the pHen, the science of the inks and celebrates the immense creative potential of The pHen Group’s vision through dynamic installations, art works, and workshops.

Currents of Change: A Water Stories Symposium

Date & Time

April 24, 2025 to April 25, 2025

Location

BioBAT Art Space 140 58th Street, Building A Brooklyn Army Terminal Brooklyn, NY 12200

About

Join us on April 24–25 for Currents of Change: A Water Stories Symposium, an interdisciplinary gathering designed to deepen our understanding of human-water relationships. Building on the themes explored in our Water Stories exhibition, this two-day event will bring together voices from across the arts, sciences, public policy, and academia to explore the ecological, cultural, and poetic dimensions of water. From microbial ecosystems to urban waterways, the symposium will investigate water as both a material and metaphorical force-shaped by human and non-human actors alike. Together, we aim to catalyze new conversations around care, stewardship, and the future of water in a rapidly changing world.

In addition to panels and talks, the symposium will feature hands-on workshops, tea ceremonies, sound baths and an incredible performance by Britton Smith and The Sting, who will perform MAMA-a powerful funk set celebrating and singing to water. These immersive experiences are designed to activate the senses, foster community, and create space for collective reflection on our relationship with this vital element.

We warmly invite you to join our community and connect with others who are deeply committed to the health of our waters and to living in symbiosis with nature.
